Week One

Tuesday 25th July 2017

Tasks that I did today:
  • Today was my first day as the Catering Marketing Intern for the Catering Services at the University of Huddersfield, I found that today was quite relaxed as I had to be shown around and learn my new role as their Intern. Today I was shown around both the Kitchen and the Outlets across the University Campus by the previous Intern Katy, where I was told about each Outlet and the staff that worked there. It was quite hard to meet the staff as they wouldn't return back until September as the Outlets were closed for Summer and wouldn't re-open until students started coming back.
  • I was also told about what I might be creating or produce for that area or specific Outlet. Another thing I was told to do was to make a note whilst on my rounds of the Outlets to see if there would be anything that would need changing making sure that I  was writing it down at the same time, so that I could then look at this further in the future.
  • I was also given an Introduction letter about the things that I will or may need over the course of the next year whilst being on placement at the University of Huddersfield with the Catering Services.
  • I was also given an Induction about the Health & Safety in the workplace and the Fire Safety Procedure. Where I was shown what I should do in case of a fire, once I had done this I then had to fill out a few documents to show that I had covered these topics, so that I knew what to do in an emergency situation.
  • Another task I had to do was to read through the University guidelines about what I can use when designing something more for the University, rather than Huddersfood, Catering Services. As the Huddersfood Team wanted me to be more experimental, bright and eye-catching so that the Catering Services designs looks more appealing to the students and staff at the University, so that they're more aware of the Catering Outlets at the University of Huddersfield.
  • I also had an induction about the workplace that I would be working in for the next 12 months of my placement, this was a very simple task to complete.
  • The final task for the day was to attend a meeting about Sustainability at the University and how Huddersfood are trying to look at more greener options to make the Huddersfood company more Sustainable.

Tasks that I did today:
  • My task over the next few days is to design the artwork for the TV Screens in the Student Central, Level 4 and the International Kitchen area, as the artwork and media for this needed to be updated with new content to advertise Huddersfood and its offers on the Screens.
  • For the TV Media, I needed to make sure that the artwork for the TV Media was designed to the correct media size. For the Portrait Screen the dimensions were 1080px x 1920px and for the Landscape Screen the dimensions were 1920px x 1080px. The designs that I was told that I need to promote on the TV Screens were:
          - Social Media Promotion (Facebook & Twitter)
         - All the outlets will be back open in September
         - Open Now (Cafe Central - 8.00am until 4.00pm) and
           (International Kitchen - 8.00am until 2.00pm)
         - New things are coming in September
  • Whilst creating my designs I was told that I could use different fonts; however, I needed to make sure that the font styles that I did use for my designs were free for personal and commercial use.
  • Another thing that I was told was to consider using bright colours, I think that the use of bright colours would allow my designs to stand out from the rest, be eye-catching and visually appealing to the students that would be starting to come back after the summer. Something else that I thought about was to maybe use my own Photography and Illustration, where I could use my own camera whilst being at the University to help me to photograph the Outlets and the food being served there.
  • For this task, today I created four designs for the artwork that would display the information of All the Outlets, explaining that they're all back open in September. - I created two Portrait and two Landscape.
  • After this I created five designs for the artwork that would display the information of Open Now - (Cafe Central - 8.00am until 4.00pm) and (International Kitchen - 8.00am until 2.00pm). - I created two Portrait and three Landscape.
  • I then created five designs for the information that would display that there would be New Things coming in September. - I created three Portrait and two Landscape.
  • The final task that I did today was to create six designs to promote the social media sites that we would use to advertise events, specials and offers to the students and staff at the University. - I created two Portrait and four Landscape.
  • The programmes that I used to create these designs for the TV Screens were:
         - Adobe InDesign - Layout, Type and Shapes
         - Adobe Illustrator - Illustrations, Coffee Takeaway Cup, Typography Takeaway Cup and Cutlery (Knives & Forks)
  • I had to look at the campus map for the specific locations of the Universities Catering Outlets. Where I made a list of the opening times, locations and what type of food each of the Catering Outlets produce and serve.

Thursday 27th July 2017

Tasks I did today:
  • Today I continued to design my artwork for the TV Screens in the Student Central, Level 4 and International Kitchen area, by coming up with different layouts and using different font styles to experiment with. However, I decided to keep the colour scheme the same so that the colours would connect together more with the colours that the Catering Services (Huddersfood) use for their logo design and colour scheme.
  • After I had done this I then decided to look at the Outlets that are known as Espresso Deli @ Weavers or Weavers for short and No.10. Where I looked at inspiration for poster designs that I could maybe use to look at before designing some promotional material for the opening times and food menus to show what food is being produced or just to advertise the Outlet to students more.
  • Within this I decided to look at different colour schemes and font styles to use for my poster designs. For Weavers I decided to use colourful colour schemes and a fancy and simple typeface for the designs because I thought that it would match the style of the outlet in which I would be producing the poster for. The typeface I decided to use for the fancy type was Pacifico Regular and for the simple typeface I used the font Quicksand Regular & Bold.

  • I then looked at No.10 where I decided to use more of a basic colour scheme that would be less bright than the colour schemes I chose to use for Weavers. The font style I also used for the poster design was a lot simpler than the font style that I used for the Weavers posters. I decided to use a simpler font style, so that it was easy to see and read better by the students and staff at the University who were my target audience.
  • Another thought that I considered to look at further for Weavers was to look at deli style menus using typography. After I had created the design I decided to look at different ways in which I could display the designs to customers (Students & Staff) and how I could display this at the Outlet.

Friday 28th July 2017

Tasks I did today:
  • The first part that I did today was to choose the designs and artwork that I wanted to use as my final pieces for the TV Screens in the Student Central, Level 4 and International Kitchen area. I needed to make sure that the designs that I created were saved as Jpegs, in order for them to go on the screen correctly. For the TV Screens, I needed to choose several design as there is five Landscape Screens and two Portrait Screens.
Five Landscape TV Screens:
  • Follow Us Page 13 of the PDF
  • All units are back Open Page 5 of the PDF
  • Open Now Page 7 of the PDF

Two Portrait TV Screens:
  • Open Now Page 9 of the PDF
  • New Things in September Page 4 of the PDF

  • I was then shown how to use Unitube where I received a step by step guide on how to use the website to upload my designs to the TV Screens. I was told that if the players weren't working correctly I needed to press the Reset Player and Reset Display. We then started to think about the use of different Social Medias to grab Students, Staff and any other people on social media's attention. We thought about looking at the like of Instagram and Snapchat.
  • After this I was then told about the printing services that we use for the products that I am going to be creating and getting my designs printed from. This company is called Route One Print.
  • We also discussed about maybe trying to work with Team Hud which is the Sports and Gym department in the University.
  • I decided to look at the Social Media Instagram even further by looking at and considering what we could post on the page. I thought about Offers, Photos of the outlets, Updates, Products, Events, Photographs of the place that the events are being held in or the offers that are happening. I thought about looking at Wedding Menus and Food Menus for inspiration to see how they're produced, where I will be able to consider ideas for the design that I will creating.
  • I enjoyed the first week whilst I was on placement because I got to learn more about the company within the University of Huddersfield, that I will be working with for the next 12 months.
