Week Three

Monday 7th August 2017

Tasks I did today:
  • Today I looked at the Burrito Challenge even further and ways in which I would be able to promote the event and advertise this to the students and staff at the University, so that they would be interested in taking part in the challenge at the Burrito Cantina bar on level 5 of Student Central at the University.
  • I decided to look at different design methods, materials, medias and styles like postcards, flyers, posters and animations. I thought that Posters and Animations would be a great idea to promote the event because I think that a Poster design will be eye-catching and display the information in a still manner that students will be able to see and read easily. However, an animation will draw more people into the event, as it is a visual moving design that will attract people more than a static design and be more attractive and presentable on the TV Screens in the Student Central, Level 4 area and on our Social Media Pages like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • I also looked into the Day of the Dead which is on Thursday 2nd November 2017, I found that this event was very interesting to look at, as I hadn't really heard about this event before. I thought it would be really interesting to look at this event further and maybe promote something for this closer to the time that the Day of the Dead happens. I found out that the Day of the Dead uses lots of skull faces around this time, where people that celebrate the event like to have skull designs on their faces using colourful and neutral paint.
  • I then started to look at the signage and posters to promote the new salad bowl that we will be introducing at International Kitchen. This salad bowl is larger than the one that they have currently.
  • For the final part of the day I started to look and find inspiration for the Food Festival Poster Design that I would need to create as an advertisement when this event is going to be taking place. The target audience for this event is students and staff at the University of Huddersfield.

Tuesday 8th August 2017

Tasks I did today:
  • Today I started to think about my ideas and designs for the Food Festival Week that Huddersfood will be hosting the week after Fresher's Week. The dates for this are Monday 25th September 2017 - Friday 29th September 2017. My ideas were:
Poster Design Number 1:

The use of photography to evidence the food in which will be or maybe at the Food Festival. Where I would be able to use typography to advertise the information, I also needed to look at which font types I would be allowed to use and whether they were free personally and commercially.

Poster Design Number 2:

This Poster Design would be all Illustration based. I needed to make sure that the font styles that I used would suit the Illustration that I was going to create. I also needed to make sure that the font styles I chose to use were personally and commercially free to use. Another thing that I had to make sure was that the colours I used for the design needed to be bright and vibrant, so that they've visually appealing and easy to catch the attention of the Students and Staff.

Poster Design Number 3:

For this Poster Design, I decided to think about a Poster that was all typography based, the things that I would have to consider for this design would be the font styles as I needed to make sure that the ones I used were personally and commercially free to use. I also needed to make sure that the font styles I was going to use for the design would be easy to read and see by the target audience in which the design was aiming at like Students and Staff.

Poster Design Number 4:

The final design that I thought about for the Food Festival poster design was a Typography based design, again I had to make sure that the fonts I used were free to use personally and commercially. However, I was thinking about adding some Illustrations to the design that would fit within the theme of the event. I feel as though this design would catch the attention of the target audience more.
  • For the Food Festival Poster design, we still didn't know which food was going to be on at the Festival. So, we thought of a backup option, which was if we didn't have the names of the companies in time we would put somewhere on the poster design to check out our Website or Social Media Pages like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more information and put that you can see the details at a later date. I also needed to put the name of the people and suppliers that would be attending the event on the TV Screens when it is closer to the time of the event.
  • Another Idea I thought about for the Poster was to maybe use Vegetable or Fruits to create a print or patterned design. The things that I needed to look at for the Poster Design is arrows, wooden boards, Fairy Lights and Chalkboards.
  • For the rest of the day I completed part of my placement training which was the DSE (Display Screen Equipment) and Fire Safety General Awareness. I was also told that I had to start thinking about ways to promote Huddersfood at the European Researchers Night on Friday 29th September 2017. Once I had done this I then started to create my Poster Design to advertise the Huddersfood Food Festival.

Wednesday 9th August 2017

Tasks I did today:
  • On placement, today I spent the day creating my Poster design to promote the Huddersfood Food Festival that was taking place in Student Central, Level 4 on the week after Fresher's Week.
  • Whilst I was creating this design I decided to play around with different styles like Photography and Typography, this would then allow me to see which option and style is the best to take forward. Whilst doing this I had to look at using different font styles I used were commercially and personally free to use. When selecting a colour scheme, I needed to make sure that the scheme was bright and visually appealing.
  • Whilst I was experimenting with this design I still didn't have confirmation about the food and the suppliers that would be at the Food Festival, so I had to use different food and drinks that I thought would be relevant to the food festival.

  • By the end of the day, I finally found out which suppliers and food would be served by the suppliers at the Huddersfood Food Festival, so it then made it easier to finalise the design in which I had created for the event where I would be to provide the correct information on the design.
  • For my final design, I decided to choose the same colour scheme and style that I had used to create my PVC Banners because I wanted consistency within my work, as I knew that we would be using the PVC Banners that week. I wanted the designs to connect and be spotted easily by the target market that I was aiming the designs at, which were students and staff that worked and attended the University of Huddersfield.

Tasks I did today:
  • Today I started to work on my Burrito Challenge Animation using the programme Adobe After Effects, this is a programme in which I am a little less experienced with, than the other programmes that I use daily. When creating this animation, I wanted to learn some new skills whilst using this programme but I also needed to make sure that the Animation worked and would be visually appealing to the students on the TV Screens and on our Social Media Pages.
  • I firstly started my animation by creating a new composition using the correct sizing for the animation on the TV screens which was 1920px x 1080px. Whilst I was creating my animation I wanted to experiment a lot more, so that I could learn new skills.
  • To do this I started to watch tutorial on Typography in After Effects on Youtube, I found that this helped me a lot, as I was able to start taking notes on new effects that I would be able to take forward into the animation in which I was going to be creating to promote the Burrito Challenge.
  • I started off by using the Burrito and Challenge where I wanted them to come on to the screen from different directions. The word Burrito from the left and Challenge from the right, but I then wanted the words to meet in the middle, eventually these words would then disappear in the opposite direction. For me to do this I had to make sure that I used the positioning option. However, for the timing to flow correctly and smoothly I had to make sure that I used the right key frames, so that the speed of the word moving wasn't too fast or too slow.
  • The key frames that i used for both of the words were: 0F, 20F,1s5F and 2s. I started with the word Burrito by moving the word to the left, so that it was off the screen and wasn't visible whilst on the 0F.
  • At 20F I then moved the word to the middle and kept the same measurements at 1s5F, so that it stayed there for 10 frames.
  • Once this happened I then moved the word Burrito to the right where the word appeared off the screen but to the right this time, so that it wouldn't be visible. I then played the animation to see if it worked correctly, which it did so I was then able to repeat this process with the word Challenge, however this time I switched the direction of the positioning so it went from Right to Middle to Left.
  • After this I then added a solid colour to the background which was an Orange colour, using the Linear Wipe effect to wipe the text off the screen, so that it would disappear. To do this process I had to start the Linear Wipe at 100%, I was then able to move my key frames forward by 10 to 2s. Where I could then change the value of the Linear Wipe from 100% to 0%. This meant that it would then allow the background to appear gradually in an upwards direction, so that it would cover the text on the screen.
  • I also learnt a new technique with typography which was using a Mask Path and a rectangle shape for the text to appear, as the rectangle shape for the text to appear, as the rectangle appeared to grow in length so that it would increase in size and return to its original size whilst revealing the word at the same time. I liked this technique, however I did find that the process was a little complicated, as it took me a few attempts to work out this technique correctly.
  • I then tried another technique for the animation using a white line that will move in a downward direction, whilst doing this it would start to reveal a word of my choice. I found that this was a good idea to use, as it was a different and creative technique to use within my typography animation.
  • Whilst I started to create my animation, I decided to create an action and a structured plan that would allow me to work out how to produce my animation in a structured way and using the correct process. This will then allow the animation to work correctly, so that it will be more attractable to the students or staff to take part in the event.
  • The Burrito Challenge Animation Structure:
  1. Burrito Challenge Title - With the logos
  2. Solid Orange Colour Transition
  3. Student Central, Level 5
  4. Thursday 28th, Friday 29th September
  5. Solid Orange Colour Transition
  6. Can you beat the Burrito?
  7. Solid Pink Colour Transition
  8. Do you have what it takes?
  9. Come join us - 11am to 2pm
  10. Solid Green Colour Transition
  11. To sign up and find out more information
  12. Solid Green Colour Transition
  13. Visit the Burrito Bar at
  14. Solid White Colour Transition
  15. 10.30am Thursday, Friday or Today
  16. Solid White Colour Transition
  17. Prizes to be won....
  18. Huddersfood Logo
  19. Maracas Moving
  • The music that I chose to use for the animation was from the website known as Ben Sound which features a few songs that are commercially free to use for animations. The song that I decided to select for my animation was called Energy.
  • I thought that a structure of my animation would be able to help me to create the design easier, so that it worked correctly.
  • The final step I look at today was a text transition called Falling Text, the process that I had to follow was:
  • Text
  • Animate - Position - Makes it go off the screen
  • Range Selector 1 - Offset
  • Put the playback header to zero - change the percentage of the offset to -100%
  • Put the playback header to one second or 10 key frames - change the percentage of the offset 100%
  • Advanced
  • Shape - Ramp up
  • Ease High + Ease Low to 50% each
  • Animate - Scale
  • Add - Property - Rotation
  • Scale - 0, Rotation - 91
  • Add - Selector - Expression
  • Expression -
delay = .1;
myDelay = delay*textIndex;
t = (time - inPoint) - myDelay;
if (t>=0){
 freq =3;
 amplitude = 150;
 decay = 8.0;
 s = amplitude*math.cos(freq*t*2*Math.Pl)/Math.exp(decay*t);
 [s,s]
}else{
 value
}

Tasks I did today:
  • Today I was told to look at inspiration for the Hospitality Brochure by looking into Weddings, hotels or Function Brochures. I found this task quite interesting because it was something different and I was really looking forward to creating, making and improving the brochure that they currently had.
  • The places that I decided to look at for inspiration were:
  • De Vere Nottingham
  • Malmaison
  • Hotel Du Vin
  • Marriot
  • Pennie Manor
  • Tankersley Manor
  • Heritage Mills
  • Once I had done this I was then able to continue creating my Burrito Challenge animation, where I was able to experiment with a different typography transition known as the Scale Text, where I followed the process of:
Scale Option - Located in the drop-down menu of the layer I was using.

Start

Opacity - 0%
Scale - 1068.7, 1068.7
Position - - 1500, 1500

I then moved the play header three key frames forward.

Opacity - 100%
Scale -  1068.7, 1068.7
Position - -1500, 1500

I then moved the play header seven key frames forward.

Opacity - 100%
Scale - 266.7, 266.7
Position - 104.0, 1004.0

Tasks I did today:
  • Today was the day that I was working at the wedding, where I had to take photographs of the function to promote Huddersfood. By taking photographs of the function area which was setup in the Creative Arts Building. I took photographs of the setup, the food that Huddersfood had put on for the Guests, Bride and Groom. I also took photographs of the wedding reception and the Bride and Groom. I found that this day was a little stressful as this was because I hadn't really got a lot of experience with Photography, however I was able to gain some more experience with my camera and learn new skills.
