Lunch & Specials Menu
- The lunch and specials menus change daily. To find out more information about this you have to see the menus on the day or ask a member of staff.
- I then started to create the International Kitchen menu by using the programme Adobe InDesign. However, I started out by using the programme Adobe Illustrator to create a world map for my design.
- I thought that the world map was a good idea because the would be able to represent that the International Kitchen serves food from countries all around the world. Afterwards I then started to look at colour schemes that I was going to create for the menu at International Kitchen. I decided to look at the colours of the world and play around with similar colours that the Huddersfood Team use for their logo and colour schemes.
- The colours in which I decided to use to experiment with for the International Kitchen menu were:
- I also had to consider whether the design looked better with either Black or White text, so that it wouldn't cause any complications to the students or staff that would be reading the menu. Whilst I was designing the menu, I decided that the World Map Illustration in which I had created needed to be faded out on the design because I felt that the map that I had created was too bold and it would cause a distraction on the menu and cause problems for the students and staff, by them not being able to read the menu for that Outlet.
- I then started to look at the placement training that I needed to undertake whilst starting the placement, the placement training in which I looked at first was DSE Occupational Health, where I learnt:
- Back is well supported.
- Thighs are well supported by the chair.
- Feet are flat on the floor.
- Forearms are near parallel.
- After I had looked at this I then looked at Occupational Health Policies and Stress, I then had to make a note of the training that I had to complete for my placement. These were the DSE Policy, The University Health & Safety Policy: with the Occupational Health Team. The DSE should be completed every two years at the start of your employment or at home if you were working from home.
- Once I had done this I then started to think more about what I could do, so I decided to look at some inspiration for food photography, which will help me gain experience when I start to shoot my own photographs of food using my camera.
- I then went back to my task of creating a new menu design for the International Kitchen. Where I looked at using a Dark Orange colour for the background of the menu and a Light Orange colour for the World Map.
- I also decided to look at producing several designs using different layouts to see how the International Kitchen menu would look, where I was able to play around with the positioning of the text and World Map Illustration. I also decided to experiment with the colour schemes of the design to see which of the colour schemes suited the design the best. When creating my menu designs I decided to look for inspiration where I looked at Hot Gala Menus and Menu Brochures.
Tuesday 1st August 2017
Tasks that I did today:
- Today whilst on my placement, I looked at the training in which I needed to complete for my placement year to understand the Health & Safety Policy and Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Awareness.
- Whilst on placement today I also learnt that it was Yorkshire Day, I needed to make sure that I posted something on to our Social Media Pages (Facebook & Twitter) about it being Yorkshire Day saying 'Happy Yorkshire Day, for all of us here at Huddersfood. On our menu, today we will be serving local Yorkshire Fish and Sausage at our International Kitchen'.
- My task for the day was to create a calendar that would feature on the website and could be accessed by the staff easily. For the:
Staff
I had to make sure that I included - The people who were going to be involved in the event, Actions, Dates that this needed to be completed by and finally when the Stock or Promotion needed to be ordered by.
Website
I had to make sure that my designs were correct and promoted the event that was happening on that day and so that the design will draw the Students and Staff into coming to the event, which will be taking place on that day.
- Fresher's Week this year is - Monday 18th September 2017 to the Friday 22nd September 2017
- After I had looked at the Calendar, I then looked at the Burrito Challenge as I needed to start creating the promotional material to advertise this event. I also thought about what type of style I wanted to work with, I thought about using Illustration, Photography or Typography. For inspiration, I looked at:
- Patterns
- Cactuses
- Skulls
- Sombreros
- Burritos
- The final things that I did at placement today was to take everything off the Huddersfood Instagram Page as we gained access to the account again, after them not having access to the account for a few years.
Wednesday 2nd August 2017
Tasks that I did today:
- This morning I had a marketing plan meeting with Sam and Sarah, where we discussed about the Food Festival that we would be hosting the week after Fresher's Week. I was told that I needed to look at inspiration by looking at Food Festival flyers, Festival flyers, Poster Designs and Food Markets. Before creating the design, I needed to confirm when the festival was going to be, where it would take place, what would be happening at the event and which companies would be attending and having stalls at the University throughout the week.
- After this we discussed about looking at each Outlet, where we would start out by looking at the Oastler Coffee Pod.
- We started to talk about looking at having fancier breads on this Outlet, we also needed to look at the decor for Oastler by looking at Artisan inspiration. Another inspiration that I could look at for this could be the cafes in Huddersfield called Coffee Boy and the Northern Tea House, to see what they do for Interior, Decor and Marketing promotion. However, we agreed that the colours in which should be used for Oastler needed to be Neutral colours.
- For my Calendar on the website and the staff calendar I needed to look at the UK's Food Calendar Dates, so that we could start to plan something for that specific day or week in which that event would be happening.
- I was told about the Universities Open Days and when they were going to be. This is because when these came around I will need to make some promotional material to promote the Huddersfood Outlets to potential students that will be looking around the University on these dates. The dates that I was given for these were:
- Saturday 17th September 2017
- Saturday 21st October 2017
- Wednesday 8th November 2017
- Friday 1st December 2017
- Within this meeting we also talked about the events which will be happening in the next few months. These are Researchers Night and Graduation in November, but I will know more details about this at a closer date to when these events will be taking place.
- I was also asked to be free on Saturday 12th August 2017 to take some photographs of a wedding in the Creative Arts Building to show the food and the function itself. I was told that I should bring my own camera and tripod to take photographs of the room setup, when the Bride and Groom arrive and the drinks reception.
- Another event that will be taking place in September is the International Week from Monday 11th September 2017 to the Friday 15th September 2017. I was also notified that Tugo Foods would be here at the University to do the Burrito Challenge on the Thursday and Friday the week after Fresher's Week.
- The final thing that was discussed in the meeting was about Yoyo Wallet and the Lunch Menu for International Kitchen to be displayed on the Portrait TV Screen each lunch time to make it easier for Students and Staff to see each day.
- My short task today was to create a notice sign for noise which said 'Apologies for any inconvenience caused and any noise whilst we make improvements to this area over the summer, thank you for understanding'. I needed to make sure that I created the design for different medias which were the TV Screens, x2 A3 Posters and also a post to send to the Internal Marketing team, so that this message could be placed on the Staff Hub, for the Staff to see.

- The final thing that I looked at today was the Instagram for Huddersfood by starting an action plan of what we were going to be posting on the page. I found out that Instagram posts need to be 1080px x 1080px to be the correct size for when I am posting on the Instagram page.
Thursday 3rd August 2017
Tasks that I did today:
- Today I had a meeting with the Marketing Internal Team Member Carla, where we talked about her setting up a new Twitter account for existing students and new students, she said that from here they will be able to help promote our events and things that we post on our Twitter Page. This will help us to be better known, but we could look at connecting with the students more by potentially looking at posting cheap recipes and healthy recipe designs to help with the student's budgets whilst they're attending the University.
- We also discussed that I should look at other Universities for inspiration for example to see what they are doing, like events, promotion and things that they're featuring on their Social Media Pages. I decided to look at Cardiff University who were putting Vegan related recipes on their Social Media. I thought about looking at different ways to show that one meal can be made in different ways, it can be made in either way.
- We also talked about how Huddersfood could maybe do some recipe cards to give out to the students at the Fresher's Fair, which will help students to cook and most importantly cook cheaply. It will also help students to engage with the Huddersfood Brand, we could also possibly look at doing weekly recipes on our Social Media Pages. Where I could look at Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Normal recipes.
- I then spent the rest of the day creating some design for the PVC Banners that will be used for a BBQ and Street Food sign, these will then be used to promote our food choices to students when we have an event.
Friday 4th August 2017
Tasks that I did today:
- At placement, today I continued to design my artwork for the PVC Banners, before finalising my design I decided to change the design from a dark colour scheme to a brighter colour scheme. Before sending my design to the printers I needed to make sure that the banners were the correct sizes and the font style that I used for these designs were personally and commercially free to use.
- I then used the printing service Route 1 Print to get my PVC Banner design printed.
- For the rest of the day I wrote out all of the training notes that I had to cover for my placement year over the next 12 months, once I had done this I was then able to complete each of the tests to show that I had completed the training. The training in which was mandatory for me to complete was:
- Health & Safety - Integral & Important
- Fire Safety General Awareness
- Manual Handling
- DSE (Via the Occupational Health Web Page)
